The Chesapeake Chapter concluded the year 2009 with the annual Holiday meeting at McLean Nursery in Baltimore, Maryland. Members and guests spent the afternoon of Sunday, December 6 making wreaths and sharing Holiday treats. Nursery owner Bill Kuhl provides wreath bases at cost as well as a wide variety of Holly cuttings from the grounds. Other members also bring cut greens and the wreaths that leave to be displayed on their creator’s homes or given as gifts, are quite spectacular. The Chapter executive board met on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the home of Charles and Dot Anderson. After a fine lunch served by the hosts, plans were discussed for 2010 Chapter events. The afternoon concluded with a tour of the Anderson Holly collection. Chapter members manned a booth at the Friends of the National Arboretum plant sale on Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24, 2010, in Washington DC. A wide selection of Hollies in quarts and one gallon containers as well as a small number of larger sizes was offered for sale. The proceeds benefit both FONA and the Chapter and provide the opportunity to spread the Holly Gospel to gardeners from all over the Capital region. On Saturday, May 8, 2010, members were invited to Patuxent Valley Nursery in Howard County, Maryland. Hosts Dan and Sigi Turner served lunch and gave a guided tour of their extensive gardens and field grown Hollies. Sue Dieter, chapter member and owner of Heartwood Nursery, invited all to an open house at the facility in Stewartstown, PA on Saturday, June 5. The remainder of 2010 will feature a tour of the mature gardens of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Welch on the shore of the Severn River in Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday, September 25. There will be a meeting at the National Arboretum in October to prune in the Holly collection. The year will conclude at McLean Nursery on Sunday, December 5 with Holiday Fare and wreath making.
